Time on Feet

A growing collection of the best running routes in Scotland. Tried and tested by seasoned runners who have trained and competed on the track, roads, cross country, and hills. Can’t find your favourite route? See if it meets our criteria for inclusion and recommend it to us!

Hiking and exploration give my favourite routes exploring Scotland that are perhaps too rough to run but offer fantastic places to explore on foot. Time on Feet: Tales from the Trails is the blog. For longer written content and a first person perspective of what it is like to explore Scotland’s wonderful landscape on foot.

Time on Feet: Tales from the Trails

Hiking and Exploration

Choose your region and narrow it down by council region and the closest town or city to find the best runs close to you. For each run you will find: details and a map of the route, type of running the route is suitable for, recommended footwear, local clubs, and even the best local cafes for a pre or post run coffee and cake. For a slower day out take a look at the hiking and exploration routes. These are brilliant routes but not ones I would say are best completed as a run, take your time and enjoy the views for a change!

If you are wanting a deeper dive into what it is like to run some of these routes, or just some quick inspiration before your Sunday long run, then take a look at Time on Feet: Tales from the Trails, the blog that gives a first person narrative of exploring Scotland’s wonderful landscape on two feet. This is more creatively written than the route pages and hopefully makes you feel like you’re on the run with me.

If you are looking for training parters then I am also working on the ‘Local Clubs’ section in which clubs contribute key information on training times, locations, and typical routes. This will hopefully promote local running clubs and help build the collection of running routes through their help. Please note, this is further down the priorities and is currently limited to club website links.

Please note: This is a side-project and a constant work in progress. Initially, the routes will be concentrated around the Scottish Borders and Glasgow, as these are the regions I am regularly in. However, I hope to build the number of routes in as many council regions as possible through my own exploration, work with friends from around the country, and your recommendations. If you think you have a suitable route that meets my criteria, please contact me using the ‘recommend’ page and I will strive to test it out.
