Time on Feet is a well known concept in running and one that I have used to develop a love of adventure and exploration. Long easy runs with my Dad around the forests where I grew up planted the seed and a love of hiking the Scottish hills shared with my Grandad caused it to bloom. This eventually grew into a drive to seek out the best running routes in every place I have lived or visited.
Eventually, I decided I had an extremely thorough knowledge of the Tweed valley footpaths and thought it a hugely under-rated area for running. I decided it would be great to share these routes with people and have always been underwhelmed by many of the resources out there suggesting running routes. Short routes around random areas of a city, long ultra-distance point to point routes that require a lot of time and travel arrangements, or just uninspiring routes that people may do frequently but are by no means a “good” route.
Perhaps egotistically, I decided I, and perhaps a few trusted friends, could share far more enjoyable and functional routes. I wanted them to be runs that most runners could do on any given day of the week, or even every day of the week. More than anything, I want more road runners to make use of the extensive network of trails and dirt roads on offer in Scotland. Many begin running later in life and think it entails pounding the pavement, with trail running reserved for those with technical expertise and equipment. This resource is there to show that is not the case. All runners can enjoy off-road running and I am confident these routes will increase the enjoyment and motivation many runners have for running, discovering new places, pushing new limits and breaking the routine of repeating the same route over and over again.
My credentials for thinking I am able to recommend good routes are that I have raced on the track, road, and cross country for almost 15 years now; winning county, regional and national medals as an individual and a team, running for Notts AC and Cambuslang Harriers. My friends and family that have contributed to the routes on this website also have similar experience of running and racing and have allowed me to cover more areas, so to them I am extremely grateful.
I hope you find your new favourite place to chase a Strava crown, or a run that you can go back to repeatedly for those long, time of feet runs.
Thank you for visiting the website, please recommend your favourite routes and spread the word of this website to others!
Cameron Smith.
