Distance and Elevation

Distance: 5.2 miles / 8.4 km

Elevation: 2932ft / 894m

recommended Footwear

Trail shoes are recommended but on a dry day you would manage in road shoes.

Recommended running

A short outing for a munro with a steep dig up to the ridge. The final pull to the ridge will be tough but spend the rest of the run plodding along and enjoying the views.

local coffee fix

I have seen good things about Stiff Peaks bakery in Ballachulish, though haven’t been myself yet. Artisan cafe and deli is a great stop south of Tyndrum if you are heading that way.

Route details

There is good parking right at the start of the trail, with plenty of other parking options nearby that involve walking along the faint trails next to the A82. Follow the stalkers path up into the Lairig Eilde and take the left fork to begin climbing up towards the ridge when you get to it. This path climbs steeply up to the ridge and you get great views of the Three Sisters and the Aonach Eagach ridge.

You quite quickly reach the ridge and from here both summits are an out and back so it is up to you which way to do it. From this, the smaller Buachaille, I think the best view is the one down Glen Etive (I prefer the Glencoe side down looking down to Ardgour on the big Buachaille) but either side the views are fantastic. Return via the outward route having done what is a fairly easy route for 2 munros, certainly for this area of the highlands.

If you are doing this on a nice weekend day then be there early, the parking can easily be close full by 9AM. Weekdays and non-school holidays are quieter.
