Route details
You can pay to park at Bowhill House but there is a small lay-by just past the entrance to the house grounds if you are cheap like me. Run west along the quiet road past the entrance to the house towards Newark castle ruins. Leave this road when you see a signpost into some forest for the Dutchess’ drive route and follow the directions for this route up and around the hill, navigation should be straightforward.
If you wish, take the small detour to the summit. Hopefully, you will be as lucky as I have been on this route and get a brilliant golden hour glow over the Ettrick and Yarrow valley hills, a beautiful and remote part of the borders.
Once you have savoured the views, continue to follow the track, descending to Bowhill House, an impressive stately home hidden away in the trees, and return to your car. Sometimes simple is best.
