Route details
Park at the Bruce’s Stone car park along Loch Trool and follow a way-marked trail for the Merrick. The route climbs steadily north through some peaceful, tranquil landscape that is very reminiscent of the Trossachs area, green and craggy as you look back over Loch Trool.
It is fairly difficult to go wrong on this route as there is an obvious path all the way to the summit with few potential deviations. Once at the summit there are great views of some of southern Scotland’s best hills, as well as a seemingly alien, craggy, lochan-strewn landscape beneath the eastern side of the Merrick. Return via the outward route for simplicity. If you didn’t mind a pathless section you could drop down alongside these lochans and follow a slightly rougher path along the ridge to make a loop back to Loch Trool rather than an out-and-back.
