local coffee fix
Zola’s bakery in Galashiels is a fantastic bakery with good coffee and lunch options. Twelve triangles in Melrose does great coffee and baked goods. Apples for Jam in Melrose is good for a breakfast/lunch.

Route details
Park at the Old Tweed Bridge and pick up the A7 briefly, to cross the river. There are two options for the first mile. 1 is to follow the road to Abbotsford, the other is to drop down under the bridge and follow a narrow trail along the river to the estate grounds. Neither is perfect; cars often fly around blind corners on the road and the trail can get over-grown, particularly in summer. The choice is yours but be careful on the road, the route does improve significantly hereafter though.
Follow the river to Abbotsford, where the paths improve to man-made manicured paths along past the impressive house. Go under the main road between Gala and Melrose, this offering a shorter return if you wish, and pick up the riverside path again out to the railway bridge over the Tweed, some sections are a little twisty.
Cross over the Tweed, head upriver towards Netherdale and at the roundabout continue upriver to follow it all the way back to the start. This side offers both nice trails and a tarmac bike path all the way to the Old Tweed Bridge, so take your pick.
